In January of 2012, husband and wife Todd Duplechan and Jessica Maher opened Lenoir with two big ideas: to help build a strong culinary community in Austin, and to redefine the food style of Austin. It’s big, but we’re not the only ones. Central Texas is lucky enough to have a vibrant community of farmers and food artisans who provide incredible produce, meat, cheese and inspiration. We source almost exclusively from them to serve a menu that changes with the seasons, and that’s truly Texas food.
Our wine program supports our food, but it does more than that. We like wines with a sense of place. We’ve always enjoyed finding examples of what a wine-producing region does really well. And so we try to share that. Our list is filled with iconic bottles from places known for great wine: Burgundy, Piedmont, Tokaji, Austria, Rioja and so many more.
We call it Hot Weather Food, and it’s about eating right for the season and the climate. It’s important to think about what we eat in relation to where we live — and it’s hot in Texas. Historically, when you look at cultures that live in hot parts of the world, food is acidic, citrusy, brothy and spicy because that’s what works with the climate. So we emulate that and keep it light: very little butter, cream and gluten. It’s food that works with the climate. It’s good for your body. It’s good for the heat. It’s Hot Weather Food.
Who We Are
Todd and Jessica met in New York City in 2003 while working towards a future in the restaurant business. Both shared a commitment to sourcing sustainable local foods from reliable, quality producers and using those ingredients to make seriously tasty food. They also shared a dream of opening a family restaurant and knew Austin, Texas, in Todd’s home state and where Jessica attended the University of Texas, would be an ideal match. It took 5 years of hard planning and developing a relationship with Austin’s food community, but when LENOIR opened in January of 2012, their dream came to life. Much of LENOIR’s success is credited to the support of friends, family and all of the incredible farmers, ranchers, producers and purveyors of Central Texas.
